Services: In accordance with Alan’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral gathering. Instead, he hoped that everyone would remember him in their own way. A family remembrance will be held at a later date. The Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.lambfuneralhomes.com.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Greater Greenfield Community Foundation, to be used toward planting trees lost in last spring’s tornado.
Alan Derby passed away at the age of 77 on September 21, 2024. He was born on April 26th in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Paul and Lois (Schakel) Derby. Alan was a devoted husband to Julie, a loving father to Stephanie and Laura, and a proud grandpa to Jacob, Jackson, Owen, Mia, and Nolan. He taught high school for 46 years, nurturing the creative spirits of countless students and leaving an indelible mark on the local community and the lives he touched.
Alan’s passions were many. You could often find him on the porch, especially during the summer months, always open to conversations. He loved traveling both within the United States and around the world, often returning with hoodies and magnets as souvenirs. He was also his grandchildren’s biggest fan, attending their sporting events and activities. He would always say, "I might not understand the games entirely, but if it’s important to those kids, I’ll be there."
A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Alan began his teaching career at Greenfield High School in 1969. He quickly became known for his passionate dedication to both art and his students. Over the years, he inspired generations with his kindness, creativity, and unwavering belief in his students’ potential, both as artists and as people.
Alan is survived by his wife Julie, his daughters Stephanie and Laura (Andrew), his sister Janet Derby, his brother in law Paul (Jan) Clemmensen. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and colleagues, all of whom remember his inspiring presence. Alan’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the creative spirit he nurtured in everyone who knew him.
Alan left behind a quote to be shared: “My wonderful life was a series of stories. Remember those stories, and I will be with you forever.” And for anyone who knew him, he would always sign off with love, "Derb."
