Celebration of Life Services: Will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. A luncheon will immediately follow the service at the church. The burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter, Iowa on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Pastor Melinda Stonebraker will officiate the service. The Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.lambfuneralhomes.com.
Open Visitation: Will be held at the Greenfield United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Family Visitation: The family will greet friends on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Greenfield United Methodist Church.
Memorials: To the family to be established at a later date.
Barbara Jean Acker was born on August 29, 1935, the daughter of Glenn Lawrence and Anzel Celeste (Tointon) Gillette in Bedford, Iowa. She passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Greenfield, Iowa, at the age of 88.
Barb attended Bedford Schools and after graduation she went on to study cosmetology in Council Bluffs, Iowa. On May 12, 1957, she was united in marriage to Vere Acker in Bedford, Iowa. To this union four children were born: Chris, Linda, Kim and Dale. They made their home in Greenfield, Iowa.
She cut hair, sold Avon and then worked at Pizza Hut in Greenfield. A couple years after Vere died, she retired from the meal site.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vere; daughter, Linda; sons-in-law, William L. Smith and Robert Coe; two grandsons, William L. Smith, Jr. and Shawn Christensen; granddaughter, Rebecca; three brothers, Duane, Charlie and Robert Gillette; and one sister, Marge Cook.
She is survived by her three children, Chris Acker of Creston, Kim Coe of Greenfield and Dale Acker of Greenfield; grandchildren,, Kelley Acker (Tina), Josh Smith, Debbie Smith and Billie Jo Ernest; two great granddaughters; five great grandsons; other relatives and friends.
