Funeral Services: Will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle with burial in the Fontanelle Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the burial. Pastor Steven Broers will officiate the service.
Visitation: Will be held on Thursday at the Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
Bertha Helen Johnson passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Clive, IA, May 9, 2014 from kidney failure. She was blessed to live 87 years and was surrounded by family when she went to heaven.
Bertha was born in Brayton, Iowa February 18, 1927 daughter of Jens and Johanne (Christensen) Jensen. She graduated Exira High School in 1944 and taught school in a country school two years before marrying Earl Johnson. Earl and Bertha farmed west of Exira until 1960 at which time they moved to a farm north of Fontanelle.
Bertha loved her family, the farm, horses, and family pets over the years. Bertha enjoyed horse sales and horse shows, trail rides, parades, county fairs and membership in the Fontanelle Saddle Club. She also enjoyed dancing and watching her kids’ and grandkids’ play sports. She’ll always be remembered for making aebelskivers at Christmas time and enjoying pie and coffee.
Bertha is survived by her sons Dennis (Wanda) of Fontanelle, Randy (Patty) of Urbandale, Craig (Stephanie) of Johnston, daughter Jana Teachout (Michael) of Clive, and 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is welcomed in heaven by her husband, Earl, son Dale and daughter-in-law Sandra, sister Mary Jean Krogh of Exira, and brother Hans Jensen of Lake City.
