Funeral Services: Will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Massena with burial in the Massena Center Cemetery, north of Massena. A luncheon will follow the burial at the church.
Open Visitation: Will be held on Sunday at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Family Visitation: Will be held on Sunday, April 7th, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials: Memorials may be made to the Massena United Methodist Church or to the Greenfield Public Library.
Darlene Mae Meyer was born on December 19, 1920, to Elwin and Pearl (Brisler) Murray in Massena, Iowa. She passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Greenfield Manor in Greenfield, Iowa, after a short battle with cancer.
Darlene spent her entire life in the surrounding area. She graduated from Massena High School in 1938 and then attended college in Cedar Falls receiving her teaching certificate. She taught until she married Elmer (Bud) Meyer on June 1, 1942. At that time you could not teach if you were married. Darlene spent many years as a house wife and mother enjoying her country life and open spaces. She renewed her teaching certificate and returned to teaching at the Bridgewater Elementary School until she retired at age 62. Darlene loved being a teacher and loved her students. Darlene was an active 4-H leader, a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Hope Circle. Her favorite hobbies were her country style life, gardening, sewing, hand embroidery, reading and letter writing. She also enjoyed researching family history. She loved her family and spending time with her three children, 6 grandkids and 11 great grandkids. Darlene was a warm and generous person.
Darlene and Bud celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 1, 2012. They enjoyed over 60 of those years on their farm west of Bridgewater and the last 2 1\2 years at the Greenfield Assisted Living Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dean Meyer; son-in-law, Steve Darling; and brother, Ron Murray.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer “Bud” Meyer; daughter, Diane Darling of Indianola; son, Gary Meyer and wife Judith of Jewell, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Carol Meyer of Atlantic; 6 grandchildren, Doug (Arla) Darling, Brad (Angelique) Darling, Kim (Chris) Iiams, Cheri (Jeff) Thieleke, Kendra Meyer and Blake Meyer; 11 great grandchildren, Taylor, Morgan, Logan, Gavin, Jacob and Nicholas Darling, Colton and Ashley Iiams and Christopher, Michael and William Thieleke; sister, Ruth Reynek and husband Rich of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Jeannie Murray of Wichita Falls, Texas; numerous nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
