Donald James Lynam died at The Village in Indianola on April 6, 2014. He was 92 years old. Don was born March 31, 1922 on a farm near Corning, Iowa to Francis and Mamie (Parcher) Lynam. He attended school in Corning, IA, Northwest Missouri State University Teachers College, Maryville, MO and graduated from Iowa State University in 1949 with a degree in civil engineering. He was a gunnery instructor and waist gunner for the Eighth Air Force, 493rd Bomb Group in World War II. His favorite missions were when they airlifted food to the Netherlands in May 1945 as part of Operation Chowhound. He married Carolyn Lucille Earhart from Clarinda, Iowa in 1946. Don was both the youngest and the oldest County Engineers in Iowa when he was at Adair County in Greenfield. Between the two times in Greenfield he also worked for Western Contracting Corporation in Sioux City, IA and Saugus, CA, Missouri Valley Construction in Missouri Valley, IA and was County Engineer for Pocahontas County at Pocahontas, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, brother Francis Paul Lynam of Atlantic, IA and his parents.
He is survived by three children: Deborah Franke husband John of Raleigh, NC; Don Lynam, Jr. of Hickory Creek, TX, and Rebecah Roberts and husband Shane of Jameson, MO. There are also six grandchildren: Krista Vanderburg of Odessa, TX; Charity Sparks and husband Tim of Denison, TX; Dorothy Prince and husband Chris of Cary, NC; Joann Cook and husband Mark of Raleigh, NC; Bryan Roberts of Trenton, MO; and Meghan Quist and husband Zack of Omaha, NE. The great grandchildren are Lily, Dorothy and Frances Vanderburg; Nicholas and Addison Sparks; Drake Brown, Zack Lusk; Orian Quist; Deven Prince; and Jacob Cook. Step great grandchildren are Amanda, Joshua, Lauren, Nicholas, and Paul Prince.
