Funeral Services: Will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield with burial at the Greenfield Cemetery. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by the Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357. Mr. Scott Donovan will officiate the service.  

Family Visitation: Will be held one hour prior to services at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield. 

Memorials: To the Donald Smith Memorial Fund to be established at a later date by the family. 

Donald Martin Smith was born July 22, 1922, near Hebron, Iowa, the son of Samuel Sylvester and Frankie Elizabeth (Palmer) Smith. He passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at the V.A. Central Iowa Health System in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 92.

Donald was raised and grew up in Adair County.  He served his country as one from the Greatest Generation, in the United States Army during WW II.  He served in the American Theater, which included Northern Africa, Italy, Sicily and France.  In 1990, he received his Honorary High School Diploma.  He and his family lived in Wyoming from 1949 to 1954 where he worked in the oil fields.  He then moved back to Iowa and worked for Schildberg Construction Company as a truck driver also known as MR. CLEAN for 35 years, retiring in 1987.  He enjoyed his family, PBR Bull Riding and the quarter slots at Lakeside Casino and an ice cold Coor’s Light!

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dora; his 18 sisters and brothers, and Mary Loudon, his longtime companion and partner in crime.

He is survived by his three daughters, Judy McWilliams (Ted) , Cherie Donovan (Scott) , and Dawn Evenson (Frank); grandchildren: Brett Sickels, Tammy Doggett (Douglas) , Teresa Rager (Al) , Tim McWilliams (Laurie), Terri Jonsson, Traci Castillo (Paul) , Brandon Pinegar (Ana), Scott Pinegar (Jena), Mason McKinnie (Katie), Mandi Thole (Nathan), Angie Kernan (Jeff), Andrea Kallhoff, (Nick), Amy Evenson (Corey); and 26 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
