Dorothy Faye McCall was born January 29, 1922, the daughter of Ross and Ione (Johnson) Woodside in Adair County, Iowa. She passed away on April 30, 2023, at the Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, at the age of 101.
Dorothy lived her entire life in Adair County. She graduated from Richland High School and then attended Normal Training for Teachers in Cedar Falls and taught country school for a couple of years. On January 15, 1944, she was united in marriage to Hugh McCall at the family home. To this union two children were born: JC and Cynthia. They lived on the family farm in Washington Township near Bridgewater, Iowa for many years until moving into her home in Bridgewater in 1980.
Dorothy spent her life working hard, always devoting herself to tending to the needs of others. She spent her time milking cows and feeding hired men on her farm. She was an excellent cook who always had food for anyone who stopped by. Those lucky enough to enjoy her delicious spaghetti and lemon meringue, strawberry and custard pies will remember them fondly. She had a passion for gardening and dedicated winters to quilting and crocheting. She was known for being a fantastic pancake chef and could whip up some of the best pancakes ever tasted.
For an incredible 90 years, Dorothy played the piano at the Avondale United Methodist Church until she retired at 101 years old. Her remarkable musical talent brought joy to many people throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hugh McCall in 2011; brothers, Elmer, Clarence and Curtis Woodside; two sisters, Ellen Rivenburgh and Lola Blazek; and daughter-in-law, Marilyn McCall.
She is survived by her son, JC McCall and wife Suzie of Fontanelle; daughter, Cynthia McCall of Windsor Heights, Iowa; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Basinger, Amy McCall Sanders (Terry), Ray McCall (Diane) and Jill McCall Swestka; five great grandchildren, Riley and Megan McCall, Sydney Sanders and Mitchell and Vivian Swestka; two step grandchildren, Rob Sanders (Rachael) and Cory Sanders (Alison); two step great grandchildren, Talon and Lakyn Sanders; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
