Gene Alden Hutchinson was born September 27, 1947, the son of Glen and Doris (Vanderflute) Hutchinson in Leon, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 71.
Gene was raised in Mount Ayr and Diagonal, Iowa, with the exception of 4 years when his parents moved the family to Dade County, Florida. He graduated from Diagonal High School in 1966. Following graduation, he attended Central College in Pella on a basketball scholarship until he enlisted in the United States Army, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following the Army, he attended the Des Moines Police Academy and served as a police officer in Des Moines and later for a few years in Texas. Upon returning to Iowa he enjoyed working in the fur buying business with his father and brother, later moving to Hopkins, Missouri. He loved telling stories of their adventures traveling the country buying fur. Later, he returned to complete his education and received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Northwest Missouri State University in 1987. He was recognized as National Academic Scholar, graduating Suma Cum Laude. Following graduation, he loved working with children and families, and was especially proud of the young men who spent summers with him and became part of the family, retiring in 2009. Gene had the ability to share many wise words of advice. He tried to live life by three phrases: never quit; never look back; and never let fear hold you back. He was united in marriage to Terry McClelland on January 14, 1998, in Orient, Iowa.
Gene enjoyed traveling and seeing the country in his motorhome and spending winters in Las Vegas. He loved sports, especially college basketball and going to Kansas City to see the Royals play. Gene was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan and loved attending NASCAR races. Aside from his family, the love of his life was his “puppies”, his three boxers, Maxwell, Marley, and Mia.
He was preceded in death by his father Glenn and brother Eddie Hutchinson.
He is survived by his wife, Terry Hutchinson of Orient; children, Teresa Hutchinson of Des Moines, Melissa Moreno of Austin, Texas, Eddie Hutchinson (Laura Beth) of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Nicole Richardson (Donald Griggs) of Beulah, Colorado, Ronald Hutchinson (Alyssa) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jordan Ingram (Matt) of Winterset, Jillian Jensen of Orient and Jentry Hutchinson of Orient; mother, Doris Hutchinson of Creston; 18 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Estella McClelland of Orient; sister, Jo Ann Rathe (David) of Creston; other relatives and friends.
