Memorials: May be directed to the Hugh Ramsey Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.
Hugh Ramsey was born in Winterset, Iowa on November 7, 1938, to Worth and Jewell (Addy) Ramsey. He passed away on March 28, 2024, peacefully at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 85.
Hugh graduated from Winterset High School in 1957. Hugh was a lifelong resident on the family farm located at the Adair-Madison County line. The Stanzel Service Station was a pride and joy of his family and him. Hugh repaired cars, equipment, tires, and met many life-time friends at the station. Stanzel was a popular place to congregate for this rural Winterset community of friends of all ages. Many stories and memories will be cherished forever.
Hugh never knew a stranger. He met so many friends along his journeys between Greenfield, Creston, Winterset, Bevington, and Macksburg, just to name a few. He could walk into any establishment for a sandwich and a Pepsi and be greeted by many friends. He enjoyed going to Clayton Auto Salvage to look for any type of salvageable part or piece of farming equipment. Clayton’s always had whatever he needed and he made it work. For many years, Hugh attended the Macksburg festivities with the skillet throwing contests.
Hugh and Todd Ramsey ventured on a trip to Montana in search of a family gold mine. The search did not “pan” out as planned, but Hugh enjoyed the amazing travel and Todd will never forget the quality time he experienced.
Hugh made a living farming and raising cattle (numerous cattle). He lived a simple life and was so proud of his farm. The farming ritual was his way or no way. The crops would be planted and harvested when he said, the hay would be cut and baled at his direction, the cattle sold when they could get them in the trailer, and he managed his farm up until his recent illness.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Robert.
He is survived by his cousins and close family, Mark (Lori) Ramsey, Todd (Diane) Ramsey, Kyle (Jenna) Ramsey, Clay Ramsey, Randy (Linda) Hennigar, Dave (Cindy) Hennigar, LeAnn (Mike) Warrior, Jennifer and Molly Hennigar, Jessica (Stuart) Thornton and Tyler Hennigar, Walker Warrior, Esther Ramsey, as well as other relatives and many friends.
