Jane Held

Funeral Services: Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle with burial in the Fontanelle Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the burial at the church.

Visitation: Wednesday, May 23rd, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle.

Memorials: To the Jane Held memorial fund to be established by the family.

Dortha Jane Held was born November 6, 1931 in Harrison Township, Adair County, Iowa to Bert F. and Viola Marie (Wills) South. She passed away May 21, 2012 at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa at the age of 80.

Jane attended country school in Harrison and Grove Townships, starting in Greenfield school in 7th grade and graduated in 1949. She married Eugene Held in January of 1952 in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. To this union four sons were born, Steven, Jim, Tim and Patrick. They moved to the farm in the fall of 1953.

Jane attended her children’s activities, worked in the yard and garden and liked being a grandmother and great grandmother. She retired from the kitchen department of the Good Samaritan and in later years worked with genealogy.

Jane joined the Fontanelle Lutheran Church in 1952. She served on the Altar Guild and helped with lunches.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Viola South; father, Bert South; and sisters, Leola Koester and Betty Appleget.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene Held of Fontanelle; four sons, Steve Held and wife Sue Breen-Held of Des Moines, Jim Held and wife Brenda of Lowell, Arkansas, Tim Held of Norwalk and Pat Held and wife Linda of Fontanelle; eleven grandchildren, Marc Held and wife Jessica, Lucas Held and wife Kirstyn, Amy Harms and husband Nick, Eric Held and wife Heather, Matthew Held, Amanda Held, Gena Ward and husband Philip, Ellen Held, Tyler Held, Megan Held and Cara Held; eight great grandchildren, Grace, Isaac, Payge, Spencer, Jacob, Travis, Mitchell and Paiton; brother, Tom South and wife Pat of Perry, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
