Velma Jean Fay Reed was born on August 10th, 1932 seventh of seven children to Meredith and Marguerite Byers of Ontario Canada. She went home to be with her Savior on June 7th, 2023. She loved to tell stories of growing up in Canada. Most of all she loved ice skating with her siblings and she passed that love on to her grandchildren. Her parents were faithful in opening their home to many visitors and friends. She met her husband, Jerry Reed, while he was attending Emmaus Bible College in Canada. He and John Guikema were invited to their home for lunch, where they met their wives. She married Jerry on March 24th, 1951, whom she loved dearly. They moved to Pennsylvania and had three daughters, Leticia, Nina, and Rose.  In 1960, the family moved to Greenfield, Iowa to assist the Greenfield Gospel Chapel. She was a stay-at-home mom; she enjoyed sewing, baking, and crocheting. She made most of our clothes; even made the patterns! She also sewed many quilts, baked countless loaves of bread, and delicious cinnamon rolls. She gave away many quilts and afghans to the missions, family, and friends. Her home was always open and made strangers feel like family. Friday nights after the high school football games we would invite our friends over for homemade chocolate chip cookies and milk. She left us a legacy of kindness and love that comes from her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jerry; daughter Leticia; brothers Graydon, Arnold, Lawrence, and Melville; sisters Roberta Hooper, and Irma Guikema; granddaughter Naphtali Hammond and great-grandson Elliot Hughes.

Mom will be lovingly remembered by her family, daughters Nina (Randy) Horn, and Rose (David) Hammond; grandchildren Angela Horn-Hughes, Stephen (Anna) Horn, Timothy (Amy) Horn, Titus (Kelly) Hammond, Naomi (John) Ehrman, Philemon Hammond, Lydia (Chris) Jozwick, Leah (Nathan) Michelsen, Joanna Hammond, and Moriah Hammond. She loved all of her 29 great-grandchildren and they loved her. Her family, other relatives, and friends will greatly miss her.
