Kenneth Laurence Gevock was born on July 3, 1937, in Moline, Illinois, to Laurence and Ruth (Goforth) Gevock, and passed away at home in Fontanelle, Iowa, on March 3, 2025, due to complications from a 2020 stroke.
He was baptized in the Holy Catholic Church in Muscatine. He attended country school in Muscatine where he rode his horse to school. To get out of class, he often told the nun that he had to go feed and water his horse. He graduated from City High in Iowa City in 1955. He wrestled on the first team at City High and practiced with the University of Iowa wrestlers.
Ken served in the Navy from 1955-1958 in the Phillipines. He then attended air traffic school in Norman, OK, and worked at Cedar Rapids, Chicago, Burlington, Anchorage, Yakatat, Alaska, and Fort Dodge, retiring in 1999.
Ken rode in 26 RAGBRAIs and never met a stranger. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and Hawkeye football.
Ken met Deb Benton in 1995 and married in 1999 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They traveled to England, Scotland, Wales, Holland, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. He had visited all 50 states.
Ken was known to many as Kenny G and Bo Jangles. He had lifelong friends: John Eckrich, Dick Teefy, Roger Griffith, and many more.
Ken is survived by his wife Deb; children: Kendra (John) Schmidt, Teri (Bill) Thompson, Laurence Gevock, Pat (Magille) Gevock, Nick Gevock, and Emilee Gevock; his wife’s children: Aaron (Ann) Benton, Adam Benton, Amanda (Hardie) Symns; 11 grandchildren; his wife’s seven grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and sister Joanne Gagner.
Ken was preceded in death by father Laurence (1955), mother Ruth Fried (2007), son Steve Gevock (2015), brother George (Buddy) Fried (2015), Amanda’s son Zayden Benton Christensen (2009), and brother-in-law David Miller (2023).
The family would like to thank Every Step Hospice and Hospice of the Midwest for their wonderful care, including Ken’s daily hospice aide Lakota Sickles, and Cassandra Gebhart. Because of his caregivers, he was able to stay at home until his passing.
The family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and deeds.
