He had an older sister, Patricia (Pat) Ann Echtermeyer and younger sister, Martha (Mills) Van Tassel. He was raised on the family farm, went to the local country school and graduated from Cumberland High School.
He was a member of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church. Marty worked hard for his family and had a long career with Iowa Electric as a Lineman. There was even a moment in Marty’s work life where he worked at the Palo Alto Nuclear Plant and he actually witnessed radioactive fuel rods being changed out of the nuclear core. Marty was also very active in his local community of Cumberland where he was part of the local volunteer fire department, elected to the school board, umpired the local baseball/softball games, managed the Cumberland Red Sox baseball town team, assisted farmers in their fields and helped anyone who asked for it.
Marty enjoyed playing baseball (pitching and managing the Cumberland town team over a span of 27 years), was an avid golfer playing year-round, loved fishing, hunting, and even had a few good dance moves. Marty married Mary Kinnersley August 7, 1972, blending their families to raise 6 children together. They enjoyed going to dances, bowling, traveling to Minnesota for fishing trips, spending winters in Arizona and filling the house with their Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren.
Marty passed peacefully away on May 5, 2024, surrounded by love, prayers and his family at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, MO.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Mills, sisters, daughter Lisa Charlene Mills and stepdaughter Kristi Lynn (Powell) Sothman.
