It is with sadness we announce Patty (Stuva) Arterburn passed away Saturday, September 21 after a resolute battle against cancer at the age of 86. Her final moments were spent tranquilly in Mitchellville with family and friends. She was serenaded by her brother Virgil and comforted by her younger brother Dick, long distance, which was a source of great joy and comfort in her final hours.

Patty was born in Bridgewater Iowa April 16, 1938. After growing up in Fontanelle, she lived in Bridgewater and Hebron farming alongside her husband Robert. Patty and Robert then became life-long residents of the Greenfield. Patty devoted her life to her children and witnessing for Christ at every opportunity. Though occasionally outspoken, Patty never wanted to be the center of attention but found pride in being a farmer’s wife, later a cook with the Greenfield Community School and also a waitress at the Greenfield Sale Barn Restaurant after her children were grown.

Patty cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Patty will always be remembered as a tireless advocate for her three boys and for her deep desire of adopting and raising their daughter Rebecca in 1968. Patty enthusiastically participated and contributed to many church and religious causes she believed in, inspiring many of her friends and family. Later in life, Patty developed a passion for dancing at the Chicken Inn with her friends and watching horse races at Prairie Meadows. (Her secret to picking winners was the color of the horse and how the horse swished their tail as they walked to the start line.) Maintaining connections to her brothers and her brothers/sisters-in-law was one of the most important items in her life.

Patty was preceded in death by her life-long partner and husband for 53 years, Robert Arterburn; her youngest son Randy Arterburn; Floyd and Jeanette Stuva father & mother; Oliver & Avis “Veno” Arterburn father-in-law & mother-in-law; Don & Wilma Stuva brother and sister-in-law; Norris & Janice Arterburn brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Bud & Evyonne Ehrsam brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Patricia Stuva sister-in-law; Nancy Arterburn sister-in-law; Casey Thomas McCann grandson; and Marvin Oder dance partner and dearest friend.

Patty is survived by her two sons Doug (Lynn) Arterburn, Craig (Treasa) Arterburn and daughter Rebecca (Steve) McCann; her brothers Virgil Stuva and Dick (Donna) Stuva; Richard (Lorraine) Peters brother-in-law and sister-in-law; and Therald Arterburn brother-in-law. Equally important to her were her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews and their spouses and children for whom she loved and thought of daily, even in her final days, praying over them all.

Patty’s favorite verse she wanted to pass on to all who knew her was, 1 Corinthians 16:14 “Do everything in Love.”

The Family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff of EveryStep Hospice for their dedication and loving manner in assisting in the care for Patty in her final months.
