Rebecca “Becky” Maxine (Porter) Powell was born August 31, 1947, the daughter of Max and Clare (Harris) Porter in Massena, Iowa. She entered into rest, after a long battle with cancer, on February 4, 2018 at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa.
Becky grew up in rural Massena. She started country school at the age of 4 and graduated from Massena High School in 1965. In June 1965 she was united in marriage to Donald Powell. To this union came three girls: Carrie LaVonne, Tammie Jo, and Misty Dawn. For many years she worked as a bookkeeper for her father’s construction company. She was a member of the Massena Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years and she took much pride in serving the community that she lived in.
In 1998, Becky moved from Massena. She met her significant other, John Deaton in July of 2007. Following her retirement from Mediacom in March of 2011, she and John enjoyed spending their days together. They shared a love of music, old TV shows, scary movies and taking short trips together.
Becky loved her daughters and was proud of each of their accomplishments. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and she enjoyed spoiling them with goodies, attending their events when she was able and babysitting.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carol and her husband James Hodge; sister, Betty Jane and her husband Richard Stice; brother, William “Bill” Porter and nephews, Danny Hodge, Reggie Hodge and Matt Schrier.
Surviving her are her significant other John Deaton of Des Moines; daughters, Carrie Ross-Stanley (David) of Des Moines, Tammie Marshall (David) of Johnston, and Misty Sachs (Greg) of Ames; John’s children; John Deaton Jr. (Tahairah) of Des Moines, Joe Deaton (Ashley) of Des Moines.
