With deep respect and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard James DeVore, a remarkable Vietnam veteran who grew up in Massena, and departed this life on June 3, 2024, at the age of 77. Born in Creston, Iowa, on October 11, 1946, to Harry and Loretta Verlee DeVore, Richard's life was marked by bravery, adventure, and perpetual movement.
After graduating from high school, Richard served with distinction in the Vietnam War, earning numerous commendations, including two Bronze Stars for heroism, outstanding achievement, and meritorious service during combat. Richard also sustained two injuries during combat in Vietnam. His experiences overseas fueled his lifelong zest for adventure that he carried into all his endeavors.
Upon his return from overseas, Richard established an extensive network through his horse-trading business. He was often found at "the horse place," a beloved ranch on the outskirts of Massena, where he devoted much of his time. Richard rode horses most days. His passion and dedication were instrumental in growing a thriving horse business. He brought in horse traders from throughout the midwest and east coast to horse sales in his hometown. Years after his dad helped found the local rodeo in Massena, Richard used his skills and network to attract livestock providers and cowboys to the rodeo. Richard also traveled extensively throughout the U.S., living in Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
Richard's passing leaves a void in the hearts of his family—his children, Jason, Allison, Danny, and Kelli, and his grandchildren, Audrianna, Madyson, Morgan and Sydney. Known for his robust stories and infectious humor, he will be missed dearly at gatherings and family events.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents.
