Born and raised to care for his family, friends, crops, and livestock, Steve Johnston was the Iowa farmer. He was born on February 9, 1959 to Don and Verna Johnston in Greenfield, Iowa where he lived his entire life — only attending Simpson College on weekends in his early 20’s, where he met his wife, Gwen (Armstrong). They married on September 3, 1983 and began their family of 5; Angela (1986), Jennifer (1988), and Adam (1991).
Steve had friendships that were decades-long and full of memories. Friends always stopped by the house to hunt, fish, watch football, play cards or enjoy a beer. He played slow-pitch softball and volleyball until his late 40’s. Gwen and Steve enjoyed traveling to national parks around the country; with his favorite being Rocky Mountain National Park where Gwen and he honeymooned. In 2023, Steve was so proud to have his kids and grandkids travel with him to Estes Park to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.
Steve was a man of few words but always had a sarcastic comment to add to every conversation. He loved John Wayne movies and John Deere tractors. His favorite seasons were planting, harvest, and deer season. He was a man of routine, with trips to Casey’s, the Coop, playing quarters at Buckner’s Garage, and his annual fishing trips to Minnesota.
On August 31, Steve lost his battle to diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s and ALS. He is survived by his wife, Gwen; his children, Angela (Jason), Jennifer (Shaun) and Adam; his grandchildren, Syanne, Kheera, Marshall, and Aliyah, his mother and father, Verna and Don; his siblings Marilea (Jeff), Gale (Kally) and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his nephew Courtney Johnston and close-friend and adopted grandpa, Gerald Hines.
