Wilbur "Pete" Riley Hoskins was born on December 1, 1927, on the Iowa family farm in Adair County, Iowa, the son of Walter and Mattie (Yearington) Hoskins. He passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at the Winterset Care Center North in Winterset, Iowa, at the age of 83.

Wilbur graduated from Richland Consolidated School in 1946. He lived at home and farmed with his dad. On March 1, 1951, he was drafted and spent a year in Germany and then returned home in 1953. He returned to the farm and cared for his dad and mom until they passed in 1974 and 1975.

Wilbur attended night classes at Creston Community College in Creston in 1982 and 1983. He received a degree in law enforcement. In November of 1984, he ran for Adair County Sheriff. He loved farming, raising his cattle and hunting. He retired after selling his cattle but he still spent many hours going to the farm and finding little chores to do or maybe just taking a nap in the sunshine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Hoskins and his wife Mary; and brother-in-law, William Crosswhite.

He is survived by his two sisters, Elise Crosswhite of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Alice Holmes and husband Ervin of Aurora, Colorado; two nephews, Robert Hoskins and wife Faye of Panama City Beach, Florida and Everett Hoskins and wife Jennifer of Bridgewater, Iowa; four nieces, Rita Gottschalk and husband Ed of Adel, Iowa, Pat Larson and husband Ralph of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Ann Routh and husband Gary of Granger, Indiana, and Darla VanFosson of Aurora, Colorado; other relatives and friends.
